Our History of Extraordinary Personalized Service

Celebrating 67 Years of Family Tradition

(From The Calgary Herald's "A Century of Success, A Salute to Calgary's Business Leaders, Organizations and Pioneers" September 2005)

With over 67 years in business, McArthur Fine Furniture and Interior Design has become a mainstay in Alberta - surviving relocations, boom and busts and even a 1972 devastating fire.

Today, stronger than ever, McArthur’s is continuing to bring customer’s homes to life through the relationships that they foster and the quality products they carry.

“Our business is built on relationships,” says Ted Pound, who became full owner of McArthur Furniture in 2004 along with his wife Theresa (Sissons). “Our underlying mandate is to provide excellent service and create remarkable home interiors for our clients.”

Gerry McArthur founded the company in 1938. Theresa’s father, Ernie Sissons took over the store in 1963, along with his wife Caryl. Ted and Theresa have been associated with McArthur since 1986. A few years earlier, in 1981, the business moved from its downtown location into its distinctive, Georgian-style, 45,000 square foot showroom at 67 Glenbrook Pl. S.W., just off Sarcee Trail.

Today, that location places McArthur within easy reach of many of Calgary’s most prestigious new communities. But back then, it was a different story.

"When we opened here, there was virtually nothing out here,” says Pound. “Looking at the surrounding development, it’s obvious that everyone wanted to build near us!”

McArthur specializes in “traditional and transitional furniture,” says Pound. That means McArthur’s selection includes unique pieces in styles to suit any taste, including traditional, contemporary and modern. Pieces that are selected from around the world.

Some of the major names offered at McArthur include: Stickley, Drexel Heritage, Theodore Alexander, Broyhill, Bradington-Young Leather,American Leather, Hekman, Gloster, Century, Lloyd Flanders and Mallin.

The three-level McArthur store, one of the largest of its kind in Alberta, includes a patio showroom, along with many vignettes to provide a ‘full visual’ of your desired look.

“We cover every category and every room in your home,” says Pound. “Some of our styles are more than 300 years old – they never go out of style.”
